Bill Hoskyns Open
Good to see so many of you at the Bill Hoskyns Open (39). With 115 fencing the event was once again well attended and with two rounds of pools and DE with repocharge not to mention a plate competition for those who went out at the first cut everyone got lots of fencing. With all metal pistes and plenty of remote boxes, weights and gauges I think the fencing was good and fair. I hope you all agree the event went well and that the new venue was good.
Top eight were;
1 LAZZATI Alessandro HAVERSTOCK
2 PERITY Tony SALLE BONES
3 BURKHALTER Marc WARWICK
3 FARINA Gianluca HAVERSTOCK
5 JEFFERSON Lloyd CRAWLEY
6 EDGAR Stephen BROMSGROVE
7 CHALMERS John BATH SWORD
8 HARRIS James REDDITCH YOUTH
Top cadet was Philip Marsh of Bath Sword. Well done to him and to the four cadets that got last 32s; Jack Hudson 21, Matt Albers 22, Chris Hay 30, Alex Paige 31, as well as the 10 that got last 64s.

New Young Hoskyns under 13’s event
On the Sunday of the Bill Hoskyns open we had some spare capacity in the Hall.
So we decided to put it to good use. We ran a new under 13 Epee event. The idea
was that it provide an event for those who are not old enough to do the Open.
It was fenced all on metal, and it will counts towards the GB Cadet development
ranking list. It will also count for the English toward the selection of the
England youth squad for the 2009
Poland trip.
We had 10 boys and 5 girls to this first event. It went smoothly and we will be running it again next year.

Training day
After the success of the training day at Warwick back in April we are running a training weekend at Winterfold House Prep School (between Bromsgrove and Kidderminster) on the weekend of 5th 6th July. This event is open to all fencers, regardless of age or sex or experience and will be focused on ‘skills and technique’. We are aware that the EYCs are on the same weekend and will accept applications from fencers who just want to do the Sunday having competed on the Saturday.
Entry forms can be found at

Look forward to seeing lots of you there.

World Cadet Championships
Hi, It seems such a long time ago now but I am sure you will still all want
to join me in congratulating our team for their efforts at the World Cadet Championships.
The star of the season has to be Jonathan May, having had a disappointing result
in the Europeans with his head not quite in the right place he excelled when
it really mattered at the Worlds. 5th place at a World Cadet Championships is
the best Boys Cadet Epee Result for many a season.
Well done Jonathan. Ben White should also be congratulated on an excellent season
finishing 9th in the European Cadet Championships and being the only British
Boys Cadet Epeeist to fence in three World Cadet Championships for as long as
I can remember, Ben finished 61st at the worlds after a tough pool. Scott Chalmers
the only one of the three not to have been to a World Championships before finished
a very respectable 54th. Well done to all three and best wishes for your under
20's career.

End of a season
And so ends the 2008 GB Boys Cadet Epee season. With a 11th at Modling (Ben
White), a 9th at Friedrichshafen (Jonathan May) a 9th at the European Championships
(Ben White) and a 5th at the World Cadet Championships and a 3rd at Gothenburg
(Ben White), this has been our best season for international results in recent
history. It has also been one of the best seasons for behaviour and team spirit
on all of the international trips. On behalf of all the staff who helped this
season to run the international trips, thank you and well done to all the members
of the GB squad. On behalf of all the fencers who attended those trips I would
like to thank Mike Thornton, Neale Thomas, Tristan Hale, and Adrian Speakman
for all their help in making the trips possible.
Warwick Leon Paul
The second event counting points toward the development ranking list of the
2009 season was the Warwick Leon Paul, 26th April. Results can be found at:

Training day
The day after the Warwick Leon Paul (Sunday 27th April) at the same venue Boys
Cadet Epee ran a successful training day. This event, open to all fencers, regardless
of age or sex, was focused on 'ways to train'. The coaching staff were especially
impressed with the work ethic of those participating. We have never previously
had a course where everybody did everything that was asked of them. It was a
long hard day and every fencer taking part did every part of the training. Well
done to all the fencers. The next GB Boys Cadet Epee training is on the weekend
of 5th 6th July at Winterfold House Prep School (between Bromsgrove and Kidderminster).
Entry forms can be found at:

I hope you can come.
Bill Hoskyns Open
The next ranking point event of the season will be the Bill Hoskyns Open, 21st
June. This event is a senior open so is only open to fencers over 13. This year
it is being held in Kidderminster. Not only should you all (if you are old enough)
be entering this event but as it is run by Boys Cadet Epee to raise funds to
subsidise Cadet Epee trips you should also promote it to as many men's and women's
Epeeists as you can. Entry form, a list of those entered and additional information
can be found at:
http://www.gbboyscadetepee.co.uk/bill%20hoskyns%20home.htm
Hope we can get a record entry this year.
New Young Hoskyns under 13's event
On the Sunday of the Bill Hoskyns open we have some spare capacity in the
Hall. So we have decided to put it to good use. We are running a new under 13
Epee event. The idea is that it provides an event for those who are not old
enough to do the Open. It will be fenced all on metal, it will count towards
the GB Cadet development ranking list (for boys but not for girls, sorry girls).
It will also count for the English (both boys and girls) toward the selection
of the England youth squad for the 2009 Poland trip. If you are too young for
the open please enter the new 'Young Hoskyns' and regardless of your age please
tell every one about the new event. Entry forms can be found at:

The rest of the 09 season
Normally by the time of the BYC Epee finals I have all the information for the
new season sorted (or at least a provisional version of the information). This
season things are a little different. There is a committee looking into the
structure of Cadet Fencing in Britain and trying to rationalise and standardise
the way things are done. There is therefore currently no definitive answer to
the question of what the rest of the season will be like, but we are very close!
There will continue to be two ranking lists. One will be used to select the
team for the European Cadet Championships and the World Cadet Championships.
This will be called the British Team selection list. The other will be used
for selecting the squad for overseas event. This will be called the Development
ranking List.
The first events scoring point for the development ranking list will be the
Arnold Leon Paul, the Warwick Leon Paul the Bill Hoskyns Open and the new Junior
Hoskyns. None of these events will count toward selection for the European or
the World Cadet Championships. The next event after these will not be until
September. The Senior Nationals will not count.
I hope to have the full information out before the Bill Hoskyns.
Computer problems
I must apologise to those of you who have found some of this information repetitive
it appears that a lot of people have not received my recent mail shots! I think
the problem is that when I send it out to so many people the system rejects
it as spam. I hope to avoid the problem this time by sending it in smaller batches.
There might be a little trial and
error involved in this.

European Cadet Championships
I am sure you will all have heard by now of the successes of our fencers at the Europeans Cadet Championships in Rovigo.
Ben White finished 9th. An excellent result, the best British Boys Cadet Epee result at a major Championship for many years. Stephen Edgar finished 22nd with Jonathan May in 81st and Scott Chalmers in 85th.
The team event was good, we fenced 5 matches with wins against Austria, and Belarus. We finished 14th out of 22.

New Season
Our new season (that’s the 2008-9 season) got under way with the Arnold Leon Paul 16th March.
Numbers were a little down, possible due to the early date of Easter. The event went well with 8 metallic pistes and 10 remote control boxes.
Well done to Jonathon Lambert winner of the under 17’s, Paul Sanchez-Lathem winner of the under 15’s and Matthew Duggan winner of the under 13’s.

Medal at Gothenburg
I am pleased to report the fifth Boys Cadet Epee trip of the 2008 season was completed safely and successfully.
We took 19 Cadets (16 British and 3 British resident foreign fencers) to the Vigor Challenge, European Cadet Circuit Cadet Epee competition in Gothenburg, Sweden. This was the second time we have been to this event.
The event had 74 fencers (up over 50% on last year) from 16 nations (UKR, ISR, RUS, NOR, CZE, DEN, BEL, ESP, JAP, SVK, SWE, FIN, RSA, HKG, IRE, GBR). They fenced one rounds of pools (11 pools of 6 & 7) cutting to 56 for DE from an incomplete 64.
Final British results were;
3rd Ben White
18th Jonathan May
19th Robert Allen
25th Scott Chalmers
29th Matthew Henderson
33rd Stephen Edgar
37th Ben Hughes
43rd James Allen
44th Tim Cheung
46th Ramana McConnon
48th Alex Ferguson
52nd Chris Hay
52nd David Stewart-Watson
55th Matthew Albers
57th Adam Williams
59th Harry Gulliver
61st Jamie Albert
62nd Jonathon Lambert
Top places were
1st Dino Milak (NOR)
2nd Richard Pokorny (CZE)
3rd Alexander Lahtinen (FIN)
3rd Ben White (GBR)
There were 7 different nations represented in the top 8 places.
This event was very good. The venue is split into two halls with a raised finals piste and coloured pistes in one hall. There is a high standard of set up because of the Junior A Grade that is going on at the same time.
The standard of behaviour of the cadets was high, they were focused, professional in their approach to the event and when eliminated they were interested in the competition and good at supporting the other members of the trip. Needles to say as the coaching staff we were delighted to have a fencer in the medals.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mike Thornton (who only got semi finals to referee) and Neale Thomas. Thanks lads.
I am sure you will all want to join me in congratulating Ben White in finishing in a medal position. Well done Ben.
MERSEYSIDE
The final ranking point competition of the 2008 season is the Merseyside next weekend. I hope you have your entry in as they are oversubscribed. A full lost of the entries can be found at http://www.moft.co.uk

Friedrichshafen
I am pleased to report the third Boys Cadet Epee trip of the 2008 season was completed safely and successfully.

The event had 194 fencers from 12 nations (GER, HUN, DEN, BEL, SOL, AUT, SVK, SWE, FIN, LUX, SUI, GBR). On the Saturday they fenced three rounds of pools (28 pools of 7 in two waves on 17 metal pistes, cut to 138 for 23 pools of 6 in two waves, cut to 96 for 16 pools of 6) cutting to 64 for DE with repachage on the Sunday.
I am sure you will want to join me in congratulating all our fencers on their results. Special congratulations to Jonathan May on his excellent result.
Final British results were;
9th Jonathan May
23rd Scott Chalmers
38th Ben White
39th Adam Williams
40th James Allen

74th Matthew Henderson
89th David Stewart-Watson

154th Jonathon Lambert
Top places were
1st David Zupancic (SLO)
2nd Rudolf Haller (GER)
3rd Konstantin Heidenrich (GER)
3rd Nikolaus Bodoczi (GER)
This event was very good, on a par with Bonn if a little smaller. We were well looked after and made to feel very welcome.
A cautionary tale to all, there was a black card in the 16 for a thrown mask!
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the lads on the trip for their good behaviour. Their effort and focus is reflected in the high proportion of the squad making it to the 64. Needles to say as the coaching staff, we were delighted to have 10 out of 16 in the 64.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Mike Thornton (who once again refereed the final) Adrian Speakman (who refereed his first international quarter final). Thanks lads.

This event was good and about the right level. The behaviour of the cadets was high, when eliminated they supported the other members of the trip, the hotel was nice, the food good, and the location very nice and also very festive.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mike Thornton (who once again refereed a final) Neale Thomas (who refereed the other semi final as well as coaching) and Klaus Kreil (a friend of Neale’s who lives locally and sorted our Taxi’s and meal bookings). Without the help of these three running the trip would have been much harder. Thanks lads.

Whitgift Leon Paul Epee
This years Whitgift LPJS was once again back in Whitgift. With over 30 in both the under 13 and the under 15’s there was plenty of good fencing. The under 17’s was a little disappointing with only 19 entries (mind you a few years ago we would all have been very pleased to see 19 in an Epee age group).
3rd Jonathan May
Tom Chung won the under 17’s beating Ramana McConnon in the final.
Jams Allen won the under 15’s beating Matthew Henderson in the final.
